It never ceases to amaze me how often I come across folks that don’t have a Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity Plan let alone a simple well thought out Backup strategy.
Let’s skip the entire continuity plan for now and just talk about backups.
When I ask folks when the last time they backed up their data, I often get that “deer in the headlights” look and they timidly admit they haven’t ever done a backup. So, the conversation turns to what would it mean to them if they lost everything. We talk about their personal and business financial data, all of the documents they have created over the last 20+ years. Some shrug it off, but reality starts to set in when we start thinking about all the wedding photos, the once in a lifetime trip to Italy or some other exotic destination. The clincher is the baby or photos of the grandchildren.
So, then the common knee jerk reaction is to buy an inexpensive USD Hard Drive, where they plug it in and leave it connected to their computer 24/7 and let the built in software run it’s backup routine.
This is better than nothing but in a true disaster it is as good as nothing.
I ask them, what if your house burns down? Your backup is now destroyed right alongside your computer.
Hopefully, you’re starting to see where I’m going with this. Online solutions aren’t the holy grail either.
As with all things security related, a layered approach is the preferred way to go.
Perform a local backup…which is much faster to restore than an online solution, but add an online / offsite solution that is separate from the original data source.
There are a number of solutions out there and they are not created equal.
